Woman serving life term got pregnant in jail, NHRC seeks report

Muzaffarpur  : District magistrate  Dharmendra Singh  has  asked the SDO and DSP  of Muzaffarpur  Sadar  to inquire into the  case  of  Puja Pathak, a  convict serving life term in Khudiram Bose central jail, Muzaffarpur,  in a case of kidnapping, and submit the report within two days.

Puja  Pathak got pregnant  and gave birth to a female child in Sheohar jail where she was lodged since October 2013. The National human rights commission(NHRC) has taken serious note of the issue  and asked Muzaffarpur DM to submit a report in this connection. The NHRC  has described the development a gross violation of Jail manual  in the state.

Puja Kumari  was arrested in October 2013 by  police  in a kidnapping case of Bochaha in Muzaffarpur  district  and was transferred to Sheohar Jail  in another case. Notorious criminal Mukesh Pathak, a native of Mehasi in East Champaran, was arrested by police at Ranchi with Santosh Jha in a case of murder at Mehasi block office and lodged in Motihari central jail. As Mukesh Pathak  was also accused in several cases in Sheohar, he was transferred to Sheohar jail in 2013.

Mukesh Pathak met Puja Kumari  in the Sheohar jail  and fell in love with her. As per police record, Puja got married to Mukesh  Pathak. The marriage of two dons was solemnized in Sheohar jail in the presence of police and jail officials. However,  they were not supposed to meet each other in private during their prison terms as per jail manual. According to report, Mukesh and Puja  had spent  time with each other  in jail in gross violation of Jail Manual allegedly in  connivance with jail superintendent of Sheohar jail. Puja fell  pregnant and subsequently gave birth to a female child in Sheohar jail  in  2014 after which the jail officials came under the  scanner of police. She was later transferred to Muzaffarpur jail. The government,  after an inquiry, suspended the jail superintendent and four warders of Sheohar jail  in this case.
