Nawada: In an unprecedented display of communal harmony in the otherwise communally tainted Nawada district, both the Hindu and Muslim communities rallied together to bury their aggressive attitude and usher in an era of brotherhood during the Vijaydashmi day and Tajiia processions in Nawada town. The members of both the communities on October 13 night witnessed the processions carrying the idol of goddess Durga and the Tajia in tandem amidst fluttering of the National tricolour and chanting of Vande Matram.

This was the result of a painstaking month-long effort of the district administration, the prominent citizens and various political parties. To thwart the design of trouble mongers, the district administration had installed 35 cctvs at vantage points, held meetings of the peace committees, involved 150 boy scouts for the grand finale. The DM, SP, civil SDO, SDPO, and all heads of the various government departments remained interconnected on WhatsApp to monitor the preparation.

Just three years back, Nawada was witness to an unprecedented 96 hours curfew with paramilitary forces the only visible human beings on the streets. Three lives were lost in the communal frenzy, which included a murderous assault on an assistant sub-inspector of police of the Town police station. In the aftermath, the then DM Adesh Titarmare (presently Bhagalpur DM) was axed inviting the public’s resentment.  Much earlier, an electrical executive engineer’s official residence in the town was set ablaze and he managed to save his life by hiding under a cot. All because the Tajia procession came in contact with a live overhead wire. In 1990, within a few days of Lalu Prasad  becoming the CM, five 5 persons of the minority community were hacked to death at village Gulni. BJP leader aor union minister Giriraj Singh represents Nawada in the Lok  Sabha.
