New Delhi : The Union Government has contracted an additional 12,660 MT of Onions which shall begin arriving in India from December 27, 2019 onwards. With this additional quantity, the total quantity of imports that have been contracted so far reaches approximately 30,000 MT.
The Department of Consumer Affairs on December 12, 2019, also directed MMTC to issue fresh tenders for additional 15,000 MT of Onions (three new tenders of 5,000 MT each). On December 9, 2019, Union Government had further revised the Stock holding limits on retailers from 5 MT to 2 MT. The Stock Limits were only revised for retailers & it was kept unchanged for wholesalers at 25 MT. Importers continue to remain exempted from these stock limits for imported onions, according to a PIB release.
Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Ram Vilas Paswan had also written a letter to all Chief Minister asking them to carry out immediate anti-hoarding operations to ensure the supplies in the markets are augmented and stock holding limits are strictly enforced.
