Nawada: Unable to bear the torture of her husband coupled with indifferent attitude of SHO, Mahila police station, a married woman Bhavani, 24, consumed poison before Nawada SP at his official chamber in the presence of the Hisua BJP MLA Anil Singh on May 31, 2017, afternoon. She was rushed to Nawada sadar hospital by the SP’s security staff but finding her condition critical, the there referred her to Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH).
A shocked Nawada SP said that the victim’s husband would be arrested and the Mahilla PS SHO, Kumari Babita Rani, would face departmental action if accusations of callousness levelled against her were found true.
According to Shashi Bhushan Singh and Manju Devi of village Bela-Belchi under Harnaut PS in Nalanda district, their daughter Bhvani, 24, was in 2014 married to Gautam Kumar, son of
Mithilesh Singh, of Nunai Bigha village under Akbarpur PS in Nawada district. However,
her husband and in-laws soon started torturing her for bringing insufficient dowry. Despite several complaints to the Akbarpur PS and Mahila PS, no action was taken against them. In fact, the Akbarpur PS SHO rebuked the victim for harping on the same nature of complaint! “ The same old story. Don’t you have something new to tell?” the SHO allegedly told Bhavani.
On 28 May, 2017, following a renewed brutal thrashing by her husband, she rushed to Mahila PS to lodge an FIR carrying a long lathi-assault scar on her back. But still the Mahila PS SHO Babita
Rani refused to lodge an FIR. It was only at the SP’s intervention that an FIR was lodged. Coming to know of it, her husband too lodged a counter FIR against Bhavani’s parents.
Bhavani, accompanied by her 17 month old daughter and parents, visited the SP on May 31 to seek justice. While they were narrating their ordeal, Bhavani, standing beside the SP, popped a
poisonous pill into her mouth to end her endless torture.
