Patna : World No 17 Kanta Tsuneyama, 23, Japan, upset World No 7 Viktor Axelsen, 25 Denmark, in the first round of Victor China Open, an HSBC BWF World Tour Super 1,000 tournament, at Changzhour, China, on September 17, 2019.

Tsuneyama beat former 2017 World Champion Viktor Axelsen in three-games 10-21, 21-14, 21-16 in 61 minutes coming from behind at Olympic Sports Center, Changzhou, China, to enter the 2nd round. Tsuneyama won 52 rallies in the match to 51 by Axelsen. Both the players won 8 consecutive points each in the match. Axelsen, however, still leads Tsuneyama 2-1 Head to Head.

Reigning Olympic Champion and 5th seed Chen Long, 30, China, beat World No 14 Lee Zii Jia, 21, Malaysia, in a three-game thriller  21-16, 12-21, 23-11 in 79 minutes to enter the 2nd round. Long won 56 rallies in the match to 58 by Jia. Jia won 6 consecutive points in the match to 5 by Long. The two players are locked 1-1 Head to Head.
