Bagaha: Use of substandard weights and measure instruments by a large number of traders in Bagaha sub-division of West Champaran district is an open secret yet the weights and measure department remains unconcerned. The victims are the consumers who are being cheated regularly by the shopkeepers and roadside vendors specially in the rural areas of the district allegedly in connivance with some employees of the department.

The vendors mostly those selling perishable items like vegetables, fruits, meat and fish in the crowded markets located in areas like Valmikinagar, Champapur, Gonauli, Harnatand, Sauraha, Chiutaha, Bherihari, Nautanawa, Chautarawa, Patilar, Bakhari Mahubani, Dahawa, Thorhi, Muradih, Madanpur, Naurangia, Bhitaha and Thakaraha are allegedly using sub-standard weights and measure tools and cheating buyers by weighing far less quantity of any commodity. They are, in fact, using bricks and stones instead of standard weights in the congested Singh market  and Gudari bazaar, Bagaha. Even some known departmental stores and grains dealers under Bagaha Nagar Parishad are using sub-standard weights and measure.

Dozens of weighing machines (dharmkantas) in the rural areas under Ramnagar, Lauria, Madhubani, Bagaha-1,Bagaha-2 blocks and other parts of West Champaran do not have valid documents. The weights and measurement hardly conducts raids to stop this practice.

Shrikisun Ram, president, HAM, Bagaha, Brijeshwar Rao, president LJP, Bagaha, Ramesh Ram, secretary, district congress committee,  West Champaran, have urged the government to stop this illegals practice by traders of Bagaha.
