Patna : World No 4 Dominic Thiem, 25, Austria, advanced to the second round of French Open defeating World No 131 Tommy Paul, 22, USA, on May 27, 2019, late night, at Roland Garros, Paris, France. Thiem, winner of Indian Wells Masters and Barcelona Open in 2019, beat Paul in a tough four-set contest 6-4, 4-6, 7-6, 6-2 in the first round.
Thiem broke Paul’s service thrice in the match while the latter broke his service only once. Thiem hammered 11 Aces in the match to 7 by Paul. Thiem won 5 games in a row to 3 by Paul, winner of French Open Boys’ singles title in 2015.
World No 45 Jan-Lennard Struff, 29, Germany, upset World No 24 Denis Shapovalov, 20, Canada, in straight sets 7-6, 6-3, 6-4 to enter the second round of the Grand Slam event. Both the players fired 8 Aces each in the match. Shapovalov committed 6 double faults to 3 by Struff.
World No 147 Salvatore Caruso, 26, Italy, upset World No 53 Jaume Munar, 22, Spain, in four-sets 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 to enter the second round. Caruso won 5 break points to 2 by Munar.
