Patna : World No 10 in ATA rankings Serena Williams, 37, USA, beat World No 83 Vitalia Diatchenko, 28, Russia,  in a three-set contest 2-6, 6-1, 6-0  at Roland Garros, Paris, France, to enter the 2nd round of French Open on May 27, 2019. World No 4 Kiki Bertens, Netherlands, also entered the 2nd round.

Winner of 23 Grand Slam singles title Serena, the 10th seed, hammered 9 Aces in the match to none by Vitalia. Serena broke Vitalia’s service 5 times in the match while the latter broke her service twice. Serena won 9 games in a row in the match to 5 by Vitalia. Serena had won French Open title in 2002, 2013, and 2015.

World No 13 Caroline Wozniacki, 28, Denmark, lost to World No 68 Veronika Kudermetova, 22, Russia, 6-0, 3-6, 3-6 in the first round. Both the players won 5 break points each during the match. Wozniacki won 7 games in a row to 5 by Vernonika.

Kiki Bertens beat World No 66 Pauline Parmentier,33,  France, 6-3, 6-4 to enter the 2nd round. Bertens won 2 break points in the match besides winning 3 games in a row.
