Patna : World No 55 Jan-Lennard Struff, 28, Germany, defeated World No 3 Aleaxnder Zverev, 21, Germany, in the Round of 32 at ATP Indian Wells Masters at California, USA, causing a massive upset in the tournament on March 12, 2019.
Struff crushed Zverev 6-3, 6-1 in 70 minutes to enter the Round of 16. Struff broke Zverev’s service 4 times in the match besides winning 4 games in a row. Struff fired 9 Aces in the match to 3 by Zverev. Zverev committed 3 double faults to 1 by Struff. Struff’s winning percentage on both his first and second serve (89% &57%) was much better than that of Zverev (65 % & 29%).
Struff will face World No 14 Milos Raonic in the Round of 16. Raonic defeated World No 226 Marcos Giron, 25, USA, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in 1 hr 56 minute in a tough contest in the third round. Raonic hammered 22 Aces in the match to 3 by Giron, Raonic broke Giron’s service thrice while the latter broke his service twice. Raonic won 5 games in a row to 3 by Giron. Giron made Raonic work hard to win every point. The match saw long rallies between the two players particularly in the first set.
World No 8 Dominic Thiem, 25, Austria, also entered the Round of 16 beating World No 29 Gilles Simon, 34, France, 6-3, 6-1 in 67 minutes in the third round. Thiem broke Simon’s service five times while the latter broke his service only once. Thiem also won 5 games in a row in the match.
World No 19 Gael Monfils, 32, France, demolished World No 91 Albert Ramos-Vinolas, 31, Spain, 6-0, 6-3 in the 3rd round firing 5 Aces in the match.Monfils broke Vinolas’ service 5 times while the latter broke his service only once. Monfils’ winning percentage on both his first and second serve (73% & 69%) was much better than that of Vonolas’ (53% & 33 %).
World No 130 Miomir Kecmanovic, 19, Serbia, also advanced to the Round of 16 beating World No 32 Laslo Djere, 23, Serbia, 6-2, 7-6 in the third round. Djere fired 7 Aces in the match but also committed 7 double faults. Miomir broke Djere’s service 4 times while the latter broke his service twice. Miomir won 5 games in a row in the match to 2 by his rival.
Miomir will face World No 73 Yoshihito Nishioka, 23, Japan, in the 4th round. Nishioka beat teenage Canadian sensation Felix Auger Aliassime, 18, the World No 58, in three sets 6-7, 6-4, 7-6 in the Round of 32. Aliassime though fired 13 Aces in the match. He, however, also committed 8 double faults to just 1 by Nishioka. Nishioka broke Aliassime’s service 5 times in the match while the latter broke his service 4 times. Both the players won 4 games each in a row.
