Patna : Swapna Barman, 21, India, on August 29, 2018, became the first Indian woman heptathlete to win Heptathlon Gold Medal at the on going 18th Asian Games at Jakarta-Palembang, Indonesia. She scored 6,026 points in 7 events that included 100m race, 200m race, 800m race, high jump, long jump, shot put, and Javelin throw. China’s Wang Qingling won Silver Medal scoring 5,994 points.

Swapna hails from Jalpaiguri, West Bengal. PM Narendra Modi congratulated Swapna on winning Gold Medal in Heptathlon. It was India’s 11th Gold at the 18th Asian Games. India has also won 20 Silver and 23 Bronze Medals. Swapna’s father Panchanan Barman was a rickshaw driver and is now bed- ridden after suffering stroke few years backĀ  while her mother worked in a tea estate.
