Patna : Sushil Kumar, 34, India, won gold medal in 74 kg freestyle wrestling event at Gold Coast Commonwealth Games (CWG) on April 12, 2018. Sushil Kumar, who had also won gold medal at 2014 Glassgow CWG in 74 kg freestyle wresting, defeated Johannes Botha, South Africa, in the gold medal round by technical superiority. Sushil Kumar, an Indian railway officer, had also won gold medal in 2010 Delhi CWG in 66kg freestyle event. Now, he has won gold medal in three consecutive CWG.

With Sushil winning gold medal on April 12, India’s gold medal tally at the Gold Coast CWG increased to 14. Earlier on the day, Rahaul Balasaheb Aware, India, had won gold medal in 57 kg freestyle wrestling.

Sushil Kumar, a native of village Baprola near Najafgarh in Delhi, is only Indian to win two individual olympic medal. He had won silver medal in 2012 London Olympics and bronze medal in 2008 Beijing Olympics, both in 66 kg freestyle wrestling. He has done post-graduation in Physical Education. His father Diwan Singh, who was a driver in MTNL, Delhi, was also a wrestler.
