Patna : Sri Lanka (SL) were bundled out for only 157 runs in their first innings in 2nd test against South Africa (SA) at The Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg, SA, on Day 1 on January 3, 2021, as fast bowler Anrich Nortje, 27, took 6/56 in 14.3 overs rocking the Sri Lankan batting order. Medium fast bowler Wiaan Mulder, 22, an all-rounder, took 3/25 in 7 overs while fast medium bowler Lutho Sipamla took 1/27. SL had won the toss and opted to bat.

For Sri Lanka, opener Kusal Perera scored 60 in 67 balls with 11 fours while spinner Wanindu Hasaranga scored 29 in 27 balls with 5 fours while fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera scored 22 in 29 balls hitting 4 fours.

Captain Dimuth Karunaratne (opener) fell to Nortje for 2 making it 19/1. His opening partner Kusal Perea fell to Wiaan Mulder for 60 and it was 71/2. Kusal Mendis fell to Mulder for zero and it was 71/3. Lahiru Thirimanne fell to Mulder for 17 making it 80/4. Thereafter, Anrich Nortje then rattled the Sri Lanka batting line-up in a devastating spell of fast bowling taking 5 of the last 6 wickets.

In Reply, South Africa were 148/1 in 37 overs at stumps on Day 1 with opener Dean Elgar unbeaten on 92 in 119 balls with 16 fours while Rassie van der Dussen was unbeaten on 40 in 82 balls hitting 6 fours. Opener Aiden Markram fell to medium fast bowler Asitha Fernando for 5 making it 34/1. Elgar and Dussen have added 114 runs in their unbroken partnership for the 2nd wicket.
