Patna : Sri Lanka (SL) were in commanding position at stumps on Day 4 on August 17, 2019, in their second innings in the 1st Test against New Zealand (NZ) at Galle International Stadium, Galle, Sri Lanka, with openers Dumuth Karunaratne (captain) and Lahiru Thirimanne unbeaten on 71 and 57 runs respectively, an impressive show under pressure.

Chasing a difficult 4th innings target of 268, SL were 133/0 with all ten wickets in hand. They need 135 runs more to win the 1st test. SL scored 57 runs in the third session of play on Day 4.

Karunaratne, who had scored 39 runs in the first innings, has scored 71 in 168 balls with only 2 fours, his 23rd test fifty. Thirimanne, who had scored 10 in the first innings, has scored 57 in 132 balls hitting 4 fours, his 5th test fifty.

NZ had scored 249 in their first innings and 285 in second. SL had scored 267 in their first innings.
