Patna :Opting to bat after winning the toss Sri Lanka (SL) were 229/4 in 87 overs in their first innings at stumps on Day 1 in the 2nd test against England at Galle International Stadium, Galle, SL, on January 22, 2021, with Angelo Mathews scoring an unbeaten 107 in 228 balls with 11 fours and Niroshan Dickwella (wk) unbeaten on 19. Captain Dinesh Chandimal scored 52 in 121 balls with 4 fours and 1 six, his 11th test ton,  while opener Lahiru Thirimanne scored 45 in 95 balls with 5 fours. Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal added 117 runs for the 4th wicket. England lead the two-match test series 1-0.

Sri Lanka had lost their first two wickets with only 7 runs on board. Opener Kusal Perera fell to fast medium bowler James Anderson for 6 making it 7/1. At the same score, Oshada Fernando also fell to Anderson making it 7/2. But, opener Lahiru Thirimanne and Angelo Mathews steadied the ship adding 69 runs for the 3rd wicket. Thirumanne also fell to Anderson and it was 76/3. Captain Chandimal fell to fast bowler Mark Wood for 52 and it was 193/4.

For England, James Andeson, 38, has taken 3/24 in 19 overs while Mark Wood has taken 1/47 in 17 overs.
