Patna : South Africa (SA) were 39/3 in 20 overs at stumps on Day 2 in their first innings in 1st Test against India at Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium, Visakhapatnam, on October 3, 3019, with Indian spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja dominating the proceedings. Opener Dean Elgar was unbeaten on 27 in 63 balls with 2 fours and a six while Temba Bavuma was batting on 2 at stumps. South Africa trail by 463 runs.
Opener Aiden Markram, who had scored century in the match against BPXI before this test, was bowled by Ashwin for 5. Theunis de Bruyn too fell to Ashwin for 4. Spinner Dane Piedt was bowled by Jadeja for a duck. For India, Ashwin took 2/9 in 8 overs four of which were maiden. Jadeja took 1/21 in 8 overs.
Earlier, India declared their first innings at 502/7 in the third session of the play on October 3 with Rohit Sharm scoring 176 and his opening partner Mayank Agarwal scoring 215 demolishing the South African bowlers. Incidentally, India’s batting mainstay in tests : Captain Virat Kohli (20), Cheteswar Pujara (6), Ajinkya Rahane (15), and Hanuma Vihari (10), failed to click in this match. Pujara had also failed in West Indies.
