Patna : Electing to bat first after winning the toss, South Africa were 266/8 in 87 overs against Australia at stumps on day one of the third cricket test at Newlands, Capetown, South Africa, on March 22, 2018, riding on an unbeaten 121 in 253 balls with 17 fours and a six by opener Dean Elgar and 64 in 95 balls by A B de Villiers.

It was 11th test century of Elgar. He and de Villiers were involved in a 128 run partnership for the third wicket. Hashim Amla scored 31 in 87 balls and was involved in a 86 run partnership with Elgar for the second wicket. Captain Faf du Plessis was out for 5 while Temba Bavuma was out for 1 and wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock for 6. Opener Aiden Markram, who had scored century in the first test, was out for a duck. Vernon Philander made 8 while Keshav Maharaj made 3.

Australian fast bowler Pat Cummins took 4/64 in 21 overs while Josh Hazlewood took 2/37 in 18 overs. Mitchell Starc and Mitchell Marsh also took one wicket each. Cummins took the wickets of Faf du Plessis, de Villiers, Kock, and Bavuma. The four-match test series is at present 1-1.
