Patna : South Africa (SA) were 172/7 in 61 overs at tea on Day 4 in in their second innings in the 2nd test against India at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune, on October 13, 2019, with Vernon Philander, who remained unbeaten on 44 in first innings, batting on 29 in 55 balls hitting 1 four and 2 sixes and spinner Keshav Maharaj, who had scored 72 in first innings, batting on 17 in 49 balls with 2 fours.

SA still trail by 154 runs. They were all out for 275 in their first innings on October 12, 2019. India had declared their first innings at 601/5 in the third session of play on Day 2 with captain Virat Kohli scoring an unbeaten 254.

SA lost three wickets that of wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock (5), Temba Bavuma (38), and Senuran Muthusamy (9) in the second session of the play on Day 4 with spinner Ravindra Jadeja taking two of them and fast bowler Mohammad Shami taking one wicket. SA had lost 4 wickets in the first session of play on the day after India enforced follow on.
