Patna : Chasing a target of 395, South Africa (SA) were 117/8 at lunch on Day 5 in their second innings in the 1st Test against  India at Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium, Visakhapatnam, on October 6, 2019, with spinner Ravindra Jadeja taking 4/51 and fast bowler Mohammad Shaming taking 3/31. SA are staring at a demoralising defeat having lost 7 wickets in the first session of the play on Day 5. They had scored 431 in the 1st innings.

Four SA batsmen : Temba Bavuma, Quinton de Kock (wk), Vernon Philander, and Keshav Maharaj, were out for a duck. Captain Faf du Plessis fell to Shami for 13 while opener Aiden Markram fell to Jadeja for 39 in 74 balls with 5 fours and a six. Theunis Bruyn was bowled by Ravichandran Ashwin for 10. Temba Bavuma was bowled by Shami, who also bowled  Quinton de Kock, who had scored 111 in the first innings. Jadeja took 3 wickets two on successive balls in his 8th over.

Senuran Muthusamy was unbeaten on 19 hitting 1 four and Dane Piedt was batting on 32 in 56 balls with 5 fours and a six at lunch. They have added 47 runs in 91 balls in an unbroken partnership for the 8th wicket.
