Patna : World No 6 P V Sindhu, 23, made a winning start to her Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Tour Finals 2018 campaign beating World No 2 Akane Yamaguchi, 21, Japan, in straight games at Tianhe Gymnasium, Guangzhou, China, on December 12, 2018. Sindu beat Yamaguchi 24-22, 21-15 in 52 minutes in Group A.

Olympic silver medallist Sindhu won 45 rallies in the match to 37 by Yamaguchi. Sindhu won 8 consecutive points in the match to 5 by her rival. Sindhu now leads Yamaguchi 10-4 head to head. The tournament is played in round robin format.

World No 8 Ratchanok Intanon, 23, Thailand, beat World No 3 Chen Yufei, 20, China, in a three-game thriller 21-18, 20-22, 21-17 in 78 minutes in her first match in the round robin stage. Former world champion Intanon won 62 rallies in the match to 57 by Yufei. Intanon won 4 consecutive points in the match to 6 by Yufei. Yufei still leads Intanon 7-2 head to head.

But, World No 14 player Samer Verma, 24, India, lost to World No 1 Kento Momota, 24, Japan, in straight games in his opening match in the men’s section. Sameer lost to Momota 18-21, 6-21 in 36 minutes. Momota crushed Sameer in the second game. Momota won 42 rallies in the match to 24 by Sameer. Momota won 8 consecutive points in the match to 4 by Sameer. Momota now leads Sameer 2-1 head to head.
