Patna : World No 11 Ashleigh Barty, Australia, upset World No 2 Petra Kvitova, 28, Czech Republic, in three-sets 7-6, 3-6, 6-2 in quarter-finals (QFs) on March 27, 2019, to reach the women’s singles semi-finals of Miami Open at Hard Rock Stadium, Florida, USA. Barty won 5 break points to 4 by Kvitová, who had won the Wimbledon singles title in 2011 and 2014.

Kvitová fitred 5 Aces in the match to 4 by Barty. Barty committed 5 double faults to 4 by Kvitová. Both the players won 3 games each in a row in the match. Barty will face World No 19 Anett Kontaveit, Estonia, in the semi-finals on March 28, 2019. Kontaveit had defeated World No 27 Hsieh Su-Wei, Chinese Taipei, in the quarter-finals on March 26, 2019.

World No 3 Simona Halep, 27, Romania, beat World No 18 Wang Qiang, China, 6-4, 7-5 in the QFs to enter the semi-finals of the tournament. Halep won 7 break points to 5 by Qiang. Halep won 6 games in a row to 5 by Qiang in the match. Halep had defeated winner of 7 Grand Slam singles title Venus Williams, 38, USA, in the QFs.
