Simona crushes Serena in final, wins Wimbledon title

Patna : World No 7 and 7th seed Simona Halep, 27, Romania, brushed aside winner of 23 Grand Slam singles titles including 7 Wimbledon titles Serena Williams, 37, USA, in the final to win her first Wimbledon title on July 13, 2019, dashing her rival’s bid to capture a record 24th major title.

Simona, winner of French Open title in 2018, demolished 11th seed Serena 6-2, 6-2 in just 56 minutes at the Centre Court at All England Club, London, playing the match of her life. It was an amazing performance by Simona, who had reached US Open final in 2018. Simona broke Serena’s service 4 times in the match while the latter failed to break her service even once. Simona also won 5 games in a row in the match. Simona won 34 service points to 26 by Serena.

Serena has won 72 career titles including Wimbledon singles title in 2002, 2003, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2015, and 2016. Simona has won 18 career titles. Simona is the first tennis player from Romania to win Wimbledon singles title. Illie Nastase, Romania, had reached Wimbledon final in 1972 and 1976.
