Simona & Muguruza enter QFs of Australian Open

Patna : World No 3 and reigning Wimbledon Champion Simona Halep, Romania, and 2017 Wimbledon Champion Garbine Muguruza, 26, Spain, entered the quarter-finals of Australian Open (AO) 2020 winning their respective 4th round matches in straight sets on January 27, 2020.

Simona Halep, the 4th seed, beat World No 17 Elise Mertens, 24, Belgium, 6-4, 6-4 Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne Park,Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, on January 27. Simona, the 2018 French Open champion, won 5 break points to 3 by Elise Mertens, the 16th seed. The Romanian won 6 games in a row to 3 by the Belgian. Simona also served 2 Aces. Elise Mertens, the 2018 AO semi-finalist, though won 45 service points to 35 by Simona, who had reached Australian Open final in 2018. Simona will face World No 31 Anett Kontaveit, 24, Estonia, in QFs on January 29.

World No 32 Garbine Muguruza, who had won French Open title in 2016 and Wimbledon title in 2017, beat World No 10 Kiki Bertens, 28,  Netherlands, 6-3, 6-3 in 4th round at Rod Laver Arena . Muguruza won 5 break points in the match to 2 by Kiki Bertens. She won 3 games in a row in the match to 2 by the Dutch. Muguruza fired 6 Aces in the match to 5 by Bertens. The Spaniard won 32 service points to 28 by the Dutch.
