Patna : Governor-cum-chancellor Ram Nath Kovind appointed Lalit Narain Mithila University (LNMU) former vice-chancellor Samrendra Pratap Singh as the new vice-chancellor of Aryabhatta Knowledge University (AKU) on Thursday.

The appointment of the new VC was made by the chancellor in consultation with Bihar CM Nitish Kumar and education minister Ashok Chaudhary. The name of Singh was finalized from a panel of five names recommended by the search committee.

It may be mentioned here that the office of AKU’s VC was lying vacant ever since the retirement of its founder VC Shambhu Nath Guha on March 19, 2014. For some time, its pro-VC Uday Kant Mishra officiated as the VC, but he resigned on March 20 last year. Since then medicine faculty dean A K Agrawal had been officiating as the VC.

As the appointment of VC was to be made by the chancellor in consultation with the state government, the same could not materialize owing to the state assembly elections. As the life of the panel submitted by the search committee was about to expire this month, the appointment of the new VC was made by the governor. According to the notification issued by the governor’s secretariat on Thursday, the appointment of the VC has been made for a period of three years from the date he assumes his office
