Patna : World No 9 in Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings Saina Nehwal, 28, India, won the Daihatsu Indonesia Masters women’s singles title, her first title in 2019, after her opponent and World No 4 Carolina Marin, 25, Spain, the reigning Olympic and World Champion, retired due to right knee injury after 10 minutes in the first game at Istora Senayan, Jakarta, Indonesia. Marin was leading 10-4 when she retired after falling awkwardly smashing a shot.

Marin was unable to carry on following the injury. Saina had lost four of her last five matches against Marin, who was very fast on the court on January 27 till she retired. Saina and Marin are now locked 6-6 head to head. Marin had also lost in the final of BWF Malaysia Masters 2019 at Kualalumpur, Malaysia, to World No 8 Ratchanok Intanon, Thailand, on January 20, 2019.
