Patna : Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, 23, India, on April 5, 2018, won first gold medal for India at the Commanweath Games (CWG) 2018 at Gold Coast, Australia, in women’s weightlifting, setting a Commonwealth and Commonwealth Games record.

The reigning world champion Manipur Girl Chanu won gold medal in 48 kg category by lifting a combined 196 kg in snatch, clean and jerk. Chanu had won Gold Medal in 48 kg category at World Weightlifting Championship at Anaheim, USA, in 2017.

Gururaja Poojary, 25, Kundapur, Karmataka, won silver medal in men’s 56 kg weightlifting category.

The Commonwealth Games got underway on April 4, 2018, with over 6,600 atheletes and team officials from 71 countries participating at it.
