Saharsa : Around three hundred inmates of Saharsa divisional jail proceeded on hunger strike on January 30 under the leadership of former MP Anand Mohan to protest the thrashing of warring prisoners by the jail staff and constables on January 29, 2017.

One of the prisoners Amarjit Yadav, in a memorandum submitted to Saharsa DM through Jail Superintendent, has alleged that Sanjit Yadav, a prisoner who was ill, was brutally assaulted by the constables. The jail administration,  however, did not confirm that prisoners were on hunger strike. Amarjit has alleged that he, his brother Sanjit and another inmate Pawan Kumar Yadav were assaulted by the constables allegedly at the behest of jail superintendent. Amarjit claimed that Sanjit  was beaten up when he tried to stop a constable from beating another jail inmate Paras Singh.
