Patna : South Africa (SA) defeated India by 31 runs in 1st ODI at Boland Park, Paarl, SA, on January 19, 2022, night, to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series as fast bowler Lungi Ngidi, medium fast bowler Andile Phehlukwayo, and spinner Tabraiz Shamsi took two wickets each causing a middle order collapse. Chasing a target of 297 runs, India could score only 265/8 in 50 overs although all-rounder Shardul Thakur and fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah added 51 runs for the 9th wicket.

SA had won the toss and opted to bat and scored 296/4 in 50 overs with captain Temba Bavuma scoring 110 runs and Rassie van der Dussen scoring an unbeaten 129 runs. Dussen was named Player Of The Match.

Thakur remained unbeaten on 50 runs in 43 balls hitting 5 fours and 1 six, his maiden ODI fifty. He hit fast bowler Lungi Nigidi for2 fours and 1 six on successive balls in 48th over. Bumrah remained 14 not out in 23 balls with 1 four. Earlier, opener Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli added 92 runs for the second wicket. But, Dhawan fell to spinner Keshav Maharaj for 79 in 84 balls with 10 fours. It led to a middle order collapse as Kohli soon fell to sp[inner Shamsi for 51 in 63 balls with only 3 fours making it 152/3.

Shreyas Iyer ( 17), wk Rishabh Pant (16), Venkatesh Iyer (2), and all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin (7), and Bhuvneshar Kumar (4), also returned to pavilion soon making it 218/8. Opener K L Rahul (captain) fell to part-time spinner Aiden Markram for 12.
