Patna : South Africa (SA) were 382/6 in 116 overs at stumps on day 2 in their first innings in the 2nd test against Pakistan at Newlands, Cape Town, South Africa, on January 4, 2019, with captain Faf du Plessis scoring 103 in 226 balls with 13 fours, opener Aiden Markram 78, and Temba Bavuma 75 with 10 fours. South Africa, who had won the toss on January 3 but opted to bowl, lead 205 runs. Pakistan were all out for 177 in their first innings.

Resuming at their overnight score of 123/2, South Africa lost their third wicket that of Hashim Amla at 126. Amla fell to fast bowler Mohammad Abbas for 24. Theunis de Bruyn fell to fast bowler Shaheen Afridi for 13 when the score was 149. Both these wickets fell in the first session of the play.

Faf du Plessis and Bavuma added 156 for the 5th wicket. Bavuma also fell to Shaheen Afridi. du Plessis then added 51 runs for the 6th wicket with wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock. He also fell to Shaheen Afridi, who took 3/112 in 26 overs. Plessis was dropped when he was 96. At stumps, Quinton de Kock was batting on 55 with 7 fours and Vernon Philander on 6.
