Patna : South Africa (SA) were 153/4 in their first innings at lunch on Day 3 in the 1st Test against against India at Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium, Visakhapatnam, on October 4, 2019, with opener Dean Elgar unbeaten on 76 in 141 balls hitting 8 fours and 3 sixes and captain Faf du Plessis unbeaten on 48 in 84 balls with 7 fours and a six.

Elgar and Faf du Plessis have added 90 runs in an broken partnership for the 5th wicket showing tremendous fightback and attacked the spinners. South Africa lost only one wicket in the first session of play on Day 3 and added 114 runs to their overnight score of 39/3. Temba Bavuma fell to fast bowler Ishant Sharma for 18 with 3 fours.

India had declared their first innings at 502/7 in the third session of play on Day 2 with Rohit Sharma scoring 176 and Mayank Agarwal scoring 215.
