Patna : Replying to Pakistan’s first innings score of 177 in 51.1 overs, South Africa (SA) were 123/2 in 30 overs in their first innings of the second test at stumps on day 1 at Newlands, Cape Town, South Africa, on January 3, 2019, riding on 78 in 96 balls with 14 fours and a six by opener Aiden Markram.

Openers Aiden Markram and Dean Elgar added 56 runs for the first wicket. Elgar scored 20. Markram and Hashim Amla added 67 runs for the second wicket. Amla was unbeaten on 24 at stumps. Twelve wickets fell on day 1.

South Africa had won the toss but opted to bowl. Batting first Pakistan were all out for 177 with captain and wicketkeeper SarfrazAhmed scoring 56 and Shan Masood 44. Duanne Olivier took 4/48 while Dale Steyn took 3/48. Kagiso Rabada took 2/35 and Vernon Philander 1/36.
