Patna : South Africa beat Sri Lanka by 5 wickets in the first ODI at Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium, Dambulla, Sri Lanka, on July 29, 2018, riding on superb bowling by fast bowler Kagiso Rabada and spinner Tabraiz Shamsi. Rabada took 4/41 while Shamsi took 4/33 to bowl Sri Lanka out for 193 in 34.3 overs. Shamsi was declared Man of the Match. Sri Lanka had won the toss and  opted to bat.

For Sri Lanka, Kusal Perera scored 81 in 72 ball with 11 fours and a six while Thisara Perera scored 49 in 30 ball with 8 fours.

In reply, South Africa scored 196/6 in 31 overs with opener and wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock scoring 47 in 59 ball with 4 fours and a six while captain Faf du Plessis scored 47 in 56 ball with 10 fours. Jean Paul Duminy remained unbeaten on 53 in 32 ball with 6 fours and 2 sixes. Hashim Amla scored 19 runs while Aiden Markram was out for a duck. David Miller was out for 10.

For Sri Lanka, spinner Akila Dhananjaya took 3/50 while Suranga Lakmal and Lakshan Sandakan took one wicket each.
