Patna : South Africa beat India by 72 runs to win the first test at Newlands, Cape Town, South Africa, after tea on the fourth day on January 8, 2018, going 1-0 up in the three-test series. Set a target of 208 runs to win the match, India were bundled out for only 135 in 42.4 overs in their second innings. Vernon Philander took 6/42 to rock the Indian batting line up. Kagiso Rabada took 2/41 and Morne Morkel 2/39. Eighteen wickets fell on the day including 10 of India.

Spinner R Ashwin was the top scorer for India making 37 runs hitting 5 fours. He was involved in a 49 run partnership with Bhuvaneshwar Kumar for the 8th wicket. Bhuvaneshwar remained unbeaten on 13.

Captain Virat Kohli was out for 27 thus failing in both the innings. So did, Rohit Sharma, who scored 10, and Cheteshwara Pujara, who was out for four only. Shikhar Dhawan made 16 and Murli Vijay 13. India had scored 209 in their first innings. South Africa had made 286 in their first innings and 130 in the second in 41.2 overs.
