Patna : Electing to bat first first after winning the toss, South Africa were 313/6 in 88 overs against Australia at stumps on day one of the 4th cricket at Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg, South Africa, on March 30, 2018, riding on a brilliant century by opener Aiden Markram, his second ton in the four-match test series and fourth overall, and 69 by A B de Villiers, his 46th test fifty. Tamba Bavuma was batting on 25 in 50 balls at stumps while wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock was batting on 7.

Captain Faf du Plessis was out for a duck while veteran Hashim Amla made 27. Opener Dean Elgar made 19 and was involved in a 53 run partnership Markram for the first wicket. Markram and Amla were involved in a 89 run stand for the second wicket. Markram and de villiers were involved in a 105 run partnership for the third wicket. Markram hit 17 fours and a six in his 152 in 216 balls while de Villiers hit 7 fours and a six in his 69 in 119 balls. Kagiso Rabada was also out for duck. de Villers and Bavuma were involved in a 52 run stand for the fifth wicket. South Africais leading the four-match series 2-1.

For Australia, fast bowler Pat Cummins took 3/53 in 19 overs while spinner Nathan Lyon took 1/95 in 21 overs. Fast bowler Chhadd James Sayers, 30, also known as Leo took 2/60. Cummins took the wickets of Markram, Amla, and du Plessis. Sayers, who is making his debut in the test, took the wickets of de Villiers and Rabada.

Wicketkeeper Tim Paine is leading Australia in the 4th test following sacking of captain Steven Smith and vice-captain David Warner in the wake of ball tampering controversy on the third day of the third cricket test.

Young opener Camron Bancroft was caught by cameras tampering the ball with sand paper.  Both Smith and Warner have been banned from playing international and domestic cricket for one year. Bancroft has also been banned for 9 months. Australian coach Darren Lehmann will also step down as coach of the team after the 4th test taking moral responsibility of the ball tampering incident.

Smith broke down in tears few times taking responsibility of the incident while addressing mediapersons at Sydney on March 29, 2018, on his return from South Africa. The ICC had banned Smith from playing in the 4th test.
