Patna : Winner of 20 Grand Slam titles, Roger Federer, 36, Switzerland, secured a return to  the World Number 1 tennis player when the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) rankings are released on February 19, 2018, after beating top Dutch player Robin Haase in three sets 4-6, 6-1,6-1 in the quarterfinals of Rotterdam, Netherlands, ATP tournament on February 16, 2018.

Federer will replace his old rival and close friend Rafael Nadal, 31, Spain, as World Number 1 tennis player. Federer will be regaining the World Number 1 position after a gap of five years and 106 days thus becoming the oldest player atop the ATP rankings at the age of 36 years and 195 days. Andre Agassi, USA, was ranked Number 1 player at the age of 33 years and 131 days in 2003.

Federer first became Number 1 tennis player in 2004. Top seed Federer needed to reach the semi-final of Rotterdam event to reclaim the World Number 1 position.  He was only 155 points behind World Number 1 tennis player Rafael Nadal.
