Retd army doctor kills 5 family members, stabs himself to death at Ranchi

Ranchi: In a sensational incident, a retired army doctor Sukanto Sarkar allegedly killed his five family members including wife Anjana Sarkar, son Samir Sarkar and daughter-in-law Momita Sarkar, two grand daughters Samita and Sumita and then committed suicide by stabbing himself at a flat on the 10th floor of Reversha Apartment at Kokar, Ranchi,on October 8 late night.

Dr Sukanto Sarkar lived at Noida with his family and had come to Ranchi on October 6, 2016. He was staying at the flat of his relative and Dental Surgeon Dr S  Chaudhary, a resident of Tharpakna area at Ranchi. On Sunday noon, Dr Chaudhary called his friend several times but there was no response from the other end. Dr Chaudhary, who had the duplicate key of the flat, then reached the flat where Dr Sukanto Sarkar was staying with his family members. When he entered the flat he was shocked to see six bodies and informed police.

Apart from Dr Sukanto, other five bodies did not have any injury mark, said the City SP, Ranchi, Kishore Kaushal, who reached the place after getting information about the incident. The City SP said that initial inquiry indicates that Dr Sukanto’s son Samir and daughter-in-law Momita wanted separation but there was some dispute over the issue between them and Momita allegedly used to threaten the family.

Police recovered some suicide notes from the flat which said the family was facing domestic problems and was unable to bear it any longer. It is suspected that Dr Sukanto Sarkar first killed his five family members by giving them poison mixed food and then stabbed himself. The incident took place under Sadar police station, Ranchi. Dog squad and FSL team too reached the place of occurrence. Police will also find out whether some other persons had killed all the six.
