New Delhi : The President on January 21, 2018, appointed the senior-most Election Commissioner Om Prakash Rawat,64,  as the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) in the Election Commission.

Om Prakash Rawat, a retired IAS officer of 1977 batch of MP cadre, will assume the charge of office of the Chief Election Commissioner on January 23, 2018. The present CEC Achal Kumar Joti demits the office on January 22, 2018, according to a PIB release. Rawat belongs to Uttrakhand. He was appointed Election Commissioner on August 14, 2015.

The President also appointed Ashok Lavasa, a 1980 batch retired IAS officer, as the Election Commissioner with effect from the date he assumes the office. He will replace Om Prakash Rawat, who has been appointed the Chief Election Commissioner.
