Patna : Captain Ajinkya Rahane scored a brilliant century under pressure, his 12th test century, as India reached  277/5 after 91.3 overs in their first innings in the 3rd session of play on Day 2 in 2nd test against Australia at Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne, Australia, on December 27, 2020. The play was stopped due to rain after 91.3 overs and it was stumps.

Rahane and all-rounder Rvindra Jadeja have so far added 104 runs in their unbroken partnership for the 6th wicket. Rahane has scored his 2nd century at Melbourne having scored his first ton here in 2014. Incidentally, it is the first century of the series from either side. Rahane was dropped twice.

Rahane is batting on 104 in hitting 12 fours while Ravindra Jadeja is unbeaten on 40 with just 1 four. Resuming at their overnight score of 36/1, India lost 4 wickets in the first two session of the play – two wickets in each session. Opener Shubman Gill was first to go. Gill fell to fast bowler Pat Cummins for 45 in 65 balls hitting 8 fours making it 61/2. Gilla and Cheteshwar Pujara added 61 runs for the 2nd wicket. Pujara also fell to Cummins for 17 making it 64/3.

Rahane and all-rounder Hanuma Vihari added 52 runs for the 4th wicket. Vihari fell to spinner Nathan Lyon for 17 and it was 116/4. Rahane and Rishabh Pant (wk) then added 57 runs for the 5th wicket. Pant fell to fast bowler Mitchell Starc for 29 in 40 balls hitting 3 fours and it was 173/5.
