Patna : World No 65 Sam Querrey, 31, USA, stunned World No 4 Dominic Thiem, 25, Austria, in four-sets in the first round of Wimbledon Championships, a 2,000 points grass courts Grand Slam tournament at London, Great Britain, on July 2, 2019. Querrey, who had reached Wimbledon semi-finals in 2017, beat Thiem, the French Open finalist in 2018 & 2019, in a four-set thriller 6-7, 7-6, 6-3, 6-0 to enter the second round.

Querrey hammered 22 Aces in the match to 15 by Thiem. Querrey broke Thiem’s service four times in the match while the latter failed to break his service even once. The American won 9 games in a row in the match to just 3 by the Austrian. Querrey committed 4 double faults to 3 by Thiem. The American won 99 service points to 73 by the Austrian.

With the defeat of Thiem, World No 4, World  No 5 (Alexander Zverev), and World No 6 ( Stefanos Tsitsipas) have crashed out of the tournament in the first round.

World No 43 Nick Kyrgios, 24, Australia, however, beat World No 44 Jordan Thompson,  25, Australia, in a five-set marathon 7-6, 3-6, 7-6, 0-6, 6-1 in the first round. Kyrgios fired 24 Aces in the match to 12 by Jordon. Kyrgios committed 6 double faults to 3 by Jordan. Jordan won 6 games in a row to 5 by Kyrgios. Kyrgios won 99 service points to 94 by Jordan.

World No 7 Kei Nishikori, 29, Japan, beat qualifier Thiago Monteiro, 25, Brazil, in straight sets 6-4, 7-6, 6-4 to reach the second round of the tournament. Nishikori won 3 break points to 1 by Monteiro. Monteiro though fired 8 Aces in the match to 5 by Nishikori. Both the players won 65 service points. Both of them also won 3 games each in a row.

World No 16 Nikoloz Basilashvili, 27, Georgia, beat World No 195 James Ward, 32, UK, in a five-set thriller 2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 8-6 in the first round coming from behind. James Ward though fired 19 Acdes in the match to 7  by Basilashvili. Both the players won 5 break points each in the match. James won 109 service points to 100 by Basilashvili.
