Patna : World No 23 B Sai Praneeth, 26, India, entered the semi-finals of Daihatsu Yonex Japan Open, an HSBC BWF World Tour Super 750 badminton tournament, at Tokyo, Japan, on July 26, 2019, defeating World No 18 Tommy Sugiarto, 31, Indonesia, in straight games in the quarter-finals.

Praneeth, the 2017 Singapore Open Champion, beat Tommy Sugiarto, son of former badminton World Champion Icuk Sugiarto, 21-12-21-15 in 36 minutes at Musashino Forest Sport Plaza, Tokyo. Praneeth  won 42 rallies in the match to 27 by Tommy. He also won 5 consecutive points to 3 by Tommy. The two players are now locked 2-2 Head to Head.

Praneeth had defeated World No 11 Kenta Nishimoto, Japan, in the first round, and World No 17 Kanta Tsuneyama, Japan, in the 2nd round to reach quarter-finals of the event.

World No 1 and top seed Kento Momota, Japan, also entered the semi-finals beating World No 8 Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, Indonesia, the 7th seed, in a three-game thriller 21-13, 20-22, 21-15 in 90 minutes in the quarter-finals. Momota won 62 rallies in the match to 50 by Ginting. He also won 7 consecutive points to 5 by Ginting. Momota now leads Ginting 9-3 Head to Head.
