PM Modi mourns former LS Speaker Somnath Chatterjee

New Delhi : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 13, 2018, condoled the passing away of former Member of Parliament and Speaker of Lok Sabha Somnath Chatterjee, 89.

“Former MP and Speaker Shri Somnath Chatterjee was a stalwart of Indian politics. He made our Parliamentary democracy richer and was a strong voice for the well-being of the poor and vulnerable. Anguished by his demise. My thoughts are with his family and supporters,’’ the Prime Minister said, according to a PIB release.

Somnath Chatterjee died at a Kolkata Hospital around 8 am on August 13. He was Lok Sabha Speaker from 2004 to 2009. He was elected to the Lok Sabha 10 times.
