Patna : World No 2 Karolina Pliskova, 27, Czech Republic, World No 7 Sloane Stephens, 26, USA, World No 9 Elina Svitolina, 24, Ukraine, and World No 12 Anastasija Sevastova, 29, Latvia, entered the women’s singles third round of French Open on May 29, 2019.

Pliskova, the 2nd seed, brushed aside World No 203 Kristina Kucova, Slovakia, 29, a qualifier, 6-2, 6-2 in the second round at Roland Garros, Paris, France, firing 8 Aces in the match.  She broke Kucova’s service 4 times in the match besides winning 5 games in a row.

Stephens, the 7th seed and 2017 US Open Champion, beat World No 75 Sara Sorribes Tormo, 22, Spain, 6-1, 7-6 to advance to the third round of the clay court event. Stephens broke Tormo’s service 7 times in the match while the latter broke her service 4 times. Stephens won 5 games in a row in the match to 4 by Tormo.

Svitolina, the 9th seed, entered the third round after her 2nd round opponent World No 67 Kateryna Kozlova, 25, Ukraine, retired before the match due to injury. Svitolina had reached QFs of French Open in 2015 and 2017.

World No 12 Sevastova beat World No 100 Mandy Minella, 33, Luxembourg, 6-2, 6-4 to enter the 3rd round. Sevastova broke Minella’s service 3 times in the match besides winning 5 games in a row.

World No 19 and 2016 French Open champion Garbine Muguruza, 25, Spain, beat World No 172 Johanna Larsson, 30, Sweden,  6-4, 6-1 to enter the 3rd round. Muguruza broke Larsson’s service 4 times in the match besides 5 games in a row.
