Patna : Patna has received more than 200 mm of rainfall since September 27, 2019, which according to Principal Secretary, Disaster Management Department, Pratyay Amrit, was unexpected.

The incessant rain, which continues to pound over a dozen districts, has virtually turned the State capital into a big lake with low lying areas like Rajendra Nagar and Pataliputra Colony, New Patliputra Colony home to many prominent citizens, private hospitals, and medical stores, getting submerged in knee deep water exposing the drainage system of Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC). Thirteen persons have died as buildings collapsed or trees fell on them due to incessant rain in Patna, Bhagalpur, and Kaimur districts.

The rain water has entered thousand of houses in Patna including Kankarbagh, Rajendra Nagar, Ashiananagar, Rajiv Nagar, Dak Bungalow roundabout. The rain water has entered many power sub-stations which could affect the functioning of sump houses.

Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, who held a video conference with district magistrates concerned on September 29, 2019, told mediapersons, “We are making all possible efforts. Torrential rain have followed a prolonged dry spell which vindicates our government’s resolve to combat climate change through environmental preservation.”

Three persons died when the boundary wall of a temple collapsed under Barari police station area while few people died in Khanjarpur locality when a house caved in Bhagalpur district, according DM, Bhagalpur. In Danapur, on the outskirts of Patna, a 12 month old girl and three women died when a tree fell on an autorickshaw carrying them. Three deaths were reported from Bhabhua, headquarters of Kaimur district, due to the collapse of two mud houses.

According to Principal Secretary, Disaster Management Department, the Met Department had last week predicted heavy rainfall for many parts of Bihar but not Patna. ” The sump houses are working overtime. However, water entering power sub-stations poses a challenge,” Amrit said.

The East Central Railway, Hajipur, said that close to 30 trains have been cancelled and many others short-terminated or operated through alternative routes due to flooding of Patna and Danapur junctions and many other smaller stations.
