Gopalganj: Union minister of state for Minor and small scale industries Giriraj Singh on January 20 inaugurated newly constructed Khadi Gramodyog Bhawan here. Singh said that through khadi, over five crore people would get employment across the country. He stressed on the need of linking khadi with modern technology.

The minister, however, lamented that less than one percent of country’s total population uses khadi. He said that father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi boycotted British clothes, he also provided people employment with the help of charkha across the country. The Union minister said that the numbers of weavers have decreased these days as their source of income is limited. He said that arrangements are being made to increase the source of income of women weaver to Rs 6,000 to Rs. 10,000 every month.

The minister felicitated an old woman weaver Champa Devi,85, on the occasion by presenting her a shawl. He said that Champa Devi is weaving khadi for the past 60 years at village Jigna Dhala under Hathwa block in Gopalganj district. This woman is still weaving sut (thread), he said. Others present on the occasion included local MP Janak Ram, Baikuthpur BJP MLA Mithilesh Tiwary and MLC Adityanarayan Pandey.
