Top seed Osaka defeated World No 90 Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, 24, Slovakia, in three-sets 0-6, 7-6, 6-1 in the first round coming from behind at Roland Garros, Paris, France. Osaka fired 10 Aces in the match to 3 by Anna. Bthe the players won 6 break points each.

Third seed Halep, the defending Champion, beat World No 47 Ajla Tomljanovic, 26, Australia, in three-sets 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 in the first round. Halep won 7 break points to 3 by Ajla, Halep won 5 games in a row in the match to 3 by Ajla.
