Patna : World No 19 in WTA rankings Naomi Osaka, 20, Japan, stunned winner of 23 Grand Slam titles and currently World No 26 Serena Williams, 36, USA, beating her in straight sets to lift the US Open 2018 women’s singles title at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Flushing Meadows, New York, on September 9, 2018. Osaka has thus become the first Japanese player to win a Grand Slam title. Osaka beat Serena 6-2, 6-4 to win the US Open title.

For Serena, it was her second straight loss in a Grand Slam tournament. She had lost to World No 4 Angelique Kerber, Germany, in the final of Wimbledon Tournament, a Grass Court event. She congratulated Osaka giving her a hug. Osaka said it was her dream to play Serena in the US Open final. The win will improve the WTA rankings of Osaka. The rankings of Serena will also improve.

Serena committed 6 double faults in the match to just 1 by Osaka. Osaka fired 6 Aces to 3 by Serena in the match. She also won 4 break points to just 1 by Serena. Osaka also won 5 games in a row to 2 by Serena.

Naomi Osaka, who will turn 21 in October 16, 2018, was born in Osaka, Japan, to a Japanese mother Tamaki Osaka and a Haitian father Leonard San Francois. Her sister Mari is also a professional tennis player. The family moved to  Florida, USA, when Osaka was three. Naomi Osaka had won WTA Indian Wells Masters in USA in March 2018.
