Patna : World No 2 Nozomi Okuhara, Japan, World No 4 Akane Yamaguchi, Japan, and World No 6 P V Sindhu, India, entered the women’s singles quarter-finals of Badminton Asia Championships 2019 at Wuhan, China, on April 25, 2019.
Former World Champion and 2nd seed Okuhara, 24, beat World No 38 Soniia Cheah, Malaysia, in a three-game thriller 17-21, 21-12, 21-15 in 54 minutes in the second round at Wuhan Sports Center, China, on April 25, 2019. Okuhara won 59 rallies in the match to 48 by Soniia Cheah. Both the players won 4 consecutive points each in the match. Okuhara now leads Cheah 5-0 head to head.
Yamaguchi, the 3rd seed, beat World No 32 Yeu Jia Min, Singapore, in a tough three-game contest 21-18, 8-21, 21-17 in 47 minutes in the 2nd round. Yamaguchi won 50 rallies in the match to 56 by Min. Yamaguchi won 6 consecutive points in the match to 10 by Min. Yamaguchi now leads Min 2-0 head to head.
Sindhu beat World No 68 Choirunisa Choirunisa, Indonesia, in straight games 21-15, 21-19 in 33 minutes in the 2nd round. Sindhu won 42 rallies in the match to 34 by Choirunisa. Both the players won 5 games each in a row. This was the first meeting between the two players.
