Patna : New Zealand (NZ) crushed India by 10 wickets in the 1st Test at Basin Reserve, Wellington, NZ, on Day 4 on February 24, 2020, to take a 1-0 lead in two-match series. NZ fast medium bowler Tim Southee, who took 9 wickets in the match – four in first innings and five in second innings- was declared Player of The Match.
India, who had scored 165 in their first innings, were all out for 191 in 81 overs in their second innings on Day 4 with opener Mayank Agarwal scoring 58 and Ajinkya Rahane 29. NZ had blanked India 3-0 in the ODI series. NZ scored 348 in their first innings and 9/0 in their second innings routing the visitors. After the match, Captain Virat Kohli said that India were not competitive enough in the match failing to put pressure on NZ bowlers.
Earlier resuming at their overnight score of 144/4, India lost their 5th wicket that of vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane at 148. Rahane fell to fast bowler Trent Boult for 29. At the same score, Hanuma Vihari fell to Tim Southee for 15 making it 148/6. Ravichandran Ashwin was lbw to Southee for 4 and it was 162/7. Ishant Sharma fell to Colin de Grandhomme for 12 making it 189/8. Rishabh Pant (wk) fell to Southee for 25 and it was 191/9. Jasprit Bumrah fell to Southee for a duck at the same score.
