Patna : New Zealand (NZ) defeated England by an innings and 65 runs in the 1st test on the 5th day of the match at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui, New Zealand, on November 25, 2019, to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match test series.

England, who had scored 353 in their first innings, were all out for 197 in their second innings on November 25 with NZ fast medium bowler Neil Wagner, 33, taking 5/44 in 19.2 overs and spinner Mitchell Santner taking 3/53 in 40 overs. Colin de Grandhomme and Tim Southee took one wicket each.  England had won the toss and opted to bat.

Openers Rory Burns and Dominic Sibley added 48 runs for the first wicket. Sibley fell to Santner for 12 making it 48/1. Rory Burns too fell to Santnet for 31 and it was 53/2. Jack leach also fell to Santner for a duck and it was 53/3. England captain Joe Root fell to Colin de Grandhomme for 11 making it 69/4. All-rounder Ben Stokes fell to Tim Southeee for 28 making it 121/5. Joe Denly fell to Wagner for 35 and it was 132/6. Ollie Pope fell to Wagner for 6 making it 133/7. Jos Buttler (wk) fell to Wagner for a duck and it was 138/8.

Sam Curran and Jofra Archer then added 59 runs for the 9th wicket. Archer fell to Wagner for 30 in 50 balls with 5 fours and it was 197/9. Stuart Broad also fell to Wagner for a duck at the same score. Sam Curran remained unbeaten on 29 in 59 balls with 6 fours.

NZ had declared their first innings at 615/9 in 201 overs with Bradley-John Watling (wk), 34, scoring 205, Santner scoring 136, Colin de Grandhomme 65, and captain Kane Williamson 51. Watling was declared Player of the Match.
