Patna : New Zealand (NZ) were 294/6 in 84 overs in their 1st innings at stumps on Day 1 in the first test against West Indies (WI) at Basin Reserve, Wellington, New Zealand, on December 11, 2020, with Henry Nicholls, 29,  unbeaten on 117 in 207 balls with 15 fours and 1 six, his 6th test century, while Will Young scored 43 in 87 balls with 4 fours. WI won the toss and opted to bowl. NZ had won the first test by an innings and 134 runs.

NZ openers Tom Latham ( stand in captain) and Tom Blundell (wk) added 31 runs for the first wicket. Blundell fell to fast bowler Shannon Gabriel for 14. Latham fell to debutaant fast bowler Chemar Holder, 22, for 27 making it 63/2. Ross Taylor fell to Gabriel for 9 and it was 78/3. Will Young and Nicholls added 70 runs for the 4th wicket. Young fell to Gabriel for 43 making it 148/4.

B J Watling and Nicholls added 55 runs for the 5th wicket. Watling fell to fast bowler Alzarri Joseph for 30 and it was 203/5. Nicholls and Daryl Mitchell then added 83 runs for the 6th wicket. Daryl Mitchell fell to Chemar Holder for 42 and it was 286/6.

For WI, Shannon Gabriel took 3/57 while Chemar Holder took 2/65. Alzarri Joseph took 1/65.
