Patna : Opting to bat after winning the toss, New Zealand (NZ) were 229/7 in 90 overs at stumps on day 1 in their first innings against Pakistan at Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi, on December 3, 2018, with captain Kane Williamson scoring 89 in 176 balls with 7 fours, opener Jeet Raval 45 with 4 fours, and wicketkeeper W J Watling an unbeaten 42 in 180 balls with just one four.

Ross Taylor was out without scoring while opener Tom Latham was out for 4. Henry Nicholls fell to spinner Yasir Shah for 1. All-rounder Colin de Grandhomme scored 20 in 22 balls with a six and a four. Spinner William Edgar Richard Somerville, 34, remained unbeaten on 12 in 46 balls. Somerville is making international debut in the test.

For Pakistan, spinner Yasir Shah took 3/62 in 31 overs while Bilal Asif took 2/57 in 24 overs. Fast bowlers Shaheen Afridi and Hasan Ali took one wicket each.
